It's Octobrrrrr in Minnesota. The winter winds are closing in fast and it's do or die...keeping those photos coming on a daily basis. This is the October PAD.

glp > October 01 - "Frank & Nat"

Frankie (our white cat) loves to take my chair whenever not occupied – it's his lot in life to make it as furry as possible. While I was taking some product/commercial photos I decided to fire off a few of my wife snuggling up to our little furry friend.

glp > October 02 - "I am cat... watch me lounge"

Frankie's favorite past time is a close call between eating and sleeping; and whenever possible, he likes to sleep in the vicinity of wherever I may be hanging out. So Frankie decided to sleep on my seamless paper backdrop and afforded me the opportunity for a cat portrait session with controlled lighting.

Good times.

glp > October 03 - "Fall Reflections"

Though this week didn't afford me much time to take some PAD's, I more than made up for it over the weekend. Here's one of my fall color shots from Saturday morning (the 6th). You can see the others here.

glp > October 06 - "The future's so bright..."

I've been wanting to explore commercial photography a bit more and had the fortune of doing so this past Sunday (the 7th) — yes, I'm getting caught up on my PAD's here and am a bit behind.

I shot a series of photos for a family-run eye wear clinic in Minneapolis so they could make their own promotional posters for use inside the clinic. And because I didn't have a studio, I had to use their little lobby area, which made for some tricky photography issues with regard to reflections — especially in this pair of reflective sunglasses.

Looks like I'll have to dust off Photoshop and scrub out some of the reflections.

glp > October 07 - "Race to the Finish"

The 2007 Twin Cities Marathon was packed as usual along the last two-tenths of a mile to the finish line. Every year thousands gather along the 26.2 miles to watch and cheer on runners from all around the globe participate in what's been dubbed as "the most beautiful urban marathon" by many.

This year's winner, Mykola Antonenko from the Ukraine, took the lead at the 7-mile mark and came in with a relatively easy lead at 2 hours, 13 minutes and 54 seconds, which was a bit over six minutes in front of the second place finisher.

The Twin Cities Marathon brings in professional marathon runners from all over the globe and seems to continually gain in popularity every year.

glp > October 05 - "Fall Fireworks"

Though this week didn't afford me much time to take some PAD's, I more than made up for it over the weekend. Here's one of my fall color shots from Saturday morning (the 6th). You can see the others here.

This shot in particular I did stage just a little bit. Shooting with some yellow leaves behind these seed pods, I threw in a few orange leaves as well to offer up a bit more color into the blurred out background.

glp > October 08 - "Minolta QTsi"

It's ebay night in my household — in other words, time to rummage through our worldly possessions, find what has not been used for a few years, and throw it up on the world's biggest garage sale. And that's where this lovely Minolta QTsi automatic 35mm is going. It takes great pictures, don't get me wrong. But I haven't shot film for four years now; and a fully automatic camera doesn't quite make the grade these days.

So if you're feeling nostalgic and want to pick up a fully-automatic 35mm camera with 70-300mm lens plus teleconverter and default 35-80mm lens, pick it up on eBay for cheap or check out the other items I've got on eBay.

So that's pretty much my evening. Product photography. :)

glp > October 09 - "In the Fields"

This evening I photographed the band In The Fields at the Varsity Theatre in Minneapolis; and following the show did a few impromptu promotional shots for them to use for other purposes. The funny thing, though, is their drummer was just filling in for them. He hailed all the way from Holland and was here on a work visa. Apparently he was just looking to have some fun and be in a band in his spare time.

He was quite the drummer.

One nice thing about photographing at the Varsity Theatre, is that their stage lights are nice and bright and make for great photographs. Granted, the stage hand was a bit of a dick and wouldn't let me walk side-stage (technically not going back stage here) to take some good close-ups of the drummer. Putz.

glp > October 10 - "Head shot session: Allison"

My photo gig that I had back in June with one of the assistant professors of Opera Studies at the University of Minnesota really paid off. Now I'm starting to offer portrait sessions (head shots) to some of the opera students. One thing's for certain... er, maybe two things... I've significantly improved since then, and also have better gear to work with in terms of lighting. The results are just so much more pleasing, that I might ask the assistant professor if she wants a free re-shoot.

Anyway, this was probably one of the best shots in terms of composition, the angle of her head, and the two light sources. Not bad, if I do say so myself.
