glp > September 11 - "Contemplation" True confessions; I didn't take this photo on September 11th. Rather, this is from one of my fashion shoots that I did towards the end of last month. Talaya was easy to work with and is pretty gifted with coming up with some fun poses. This shoot in particular was to give her some more photos to prepare for some TV work that she's going to be doing with some new extension of the BET network; or at least something of that flavor. I thought this might be a good photo for the September 11th anniversary as each of us have our varying levels of contemplation that we might endure that day.
glp > (July 05) "Fire in the Hole" My wife and I went over to Fort Snelling Historic Site today and spent a few hours there. At the tail end of our visit, I caught this cannon demonstration. It was quite loud, which I'm sure you can gather by the body language of the historians playing their roles. It was an interesting place to visit (haven't been there since I was little), but can't imagine coming back all that frequently unless there were special events going on. But it's still a must-visit when you stop in Minnesota. There's a lot of history contained in that facility.
glp > (July 21) "Midsummer's Eve Shoot" I had a chance to do a great photo shoot this morning and evening, capturing both morning and late evening light and experimenting with various lighting techniques. This one used a side flash fill, diffused with an umbrella. I wanted the green, mossy floor to come to life and make it almost dreamlike&mdash;something you might see out of a fairy tale or something. You can see the rest of the photos here: morning session / evening session I hope to get caught up with the rest of my photos soon here and put up some additional galleries. It's been a very busy weekend for me. Now if I can just make time to read more of my Harry Potter book.
glp > (June 14) "Must you?" I know that's running through Charlie's mind when I shot this photo. He's already developed a learned response for when my 580EX Speedlite is charging&mdash;he flees the scene and finds a place to hide. He's skittish like that. But natural light is my friend and allows me to get serene moments like this with my boys. A little natural backlighting and sidelighting from the windows and the kind of "I'm ready for a nap" look that's simply contagious.
glp > (June 02) With the recent events concerning Colony Collapse Disorder, I have grown ever more appreciative and fond of the bees that come and pollinate our flowers, fruits and vegetables. After this morning's portrait session I took my camera over to Como Park in Saint Paul and took a few exposures there of their flower gardens.
glp > September 15 - "Christina" I had another fashion session this weekend and really liked this one in particular. We were shooting (pardon the pun) for more of a rustic Gap/Levi's commercial look in the photos. When I saw this one load up in Lightroom and made just a few adjustments to it, I thought this had total magazine ad written all over it. You can see the rest of the photos here.
glp > September 09 - "Seth" Given my really long night last night, I slept in late and the camera never made it out for any PAD moments. So I went through my volumes of photos that haven't been processed yet and found this one that I liked. I took this of my friend Seth at a camp outing he persuaded me to come to for students from Kenya. Well, if you have seen any of my SP's, you know I don't look Kenyan &mdash; at all. But it was still a good time. I captured this photo as he was reviewing pictures on his laptop at the moment; makes him look deep in thought. But Seth's the kind of person you could trust and rely on &mdash; his word is gold.
glp > September 20 - "Midnight Snack" Alright mister... put the hands where I can see 'em. Step...awaaaay..from the fridge! Well, it was a night of creativity for me. I spent most of the time messing around with GarageBand and came up with a tune (mp3 file, 5.6 MB) that I'm pretty pleased with for throwing it together in about three hours' time. But by the time 11:30 rolled around, I realized that I hadn't taken a photo-of-the-day and nearly copped out with just taking a photo of the GarageBand screen in action...but that's boring. So I decided to try and put some creative effort into the shot and decided to hook up one of my 430EX's to a skyport receiver, threw it in the fridge and fired off a few shots to give me something to choose from. Now I could have just held the shutter open longer and just used the ambient light from the fridge, but having the diffused speedlight in the fridge projected better light that I could control. I've a few other ones that I didn't post; and if you'd like to see 'em I can throw 'em up in a folder somewhere. Otherwise they'll just stay on my hard drive. Anyway, enjoy and as always, thank you so much for the feedback and any input that'll help me become better at what I do. Peace.
glp > (July 13) "Paid Gig" I had my actual first paid photo gig last night. A local magazine/website that covers Minneapolis night life (I didn't know we had a magazine for such things) is hiring me to come shoot the night club, lounge, and bar scene on Friday and Saturday nights. I'm up anyway, so might as well get paid to be up and about. I will say that I'm not getting paid a lot, but it's the first step in becoming a published photographer. After I can establish myself, my name, and my work with this magazine (and people within the entertainment industry in Minneapolis), my next move will be to work my way into freelancing with area magazines/newspapers like City Pages, Rake, Vita.MN, and other entertainment-driven papers/magazines. Ideally I'd love to cover concerts and events as a side job to start, and see where that leads. The one thing I don't really care for about shooting at bars, nightclubs, etc. is that the sub-woofers are always way too loud, it can be crowded, and the parking in Minneapolis sucks. But if it helps get me published and better exposure as a photographer that can deliver, cool.
